one of the founding members of apollonia, shonky was responsible for his label’s very first release back in 2012 with ‘the minneapolis touch’. outside of working on the trio’s debut lp ‘tour a tour’, shonky has been relatively quiet on the solo tip. here on apollonia’s 25th release we’re treated to four new cuts from the berlin-based parisian, kicking off with plombie&#768,,re (plumber in english). shonky injects a variety of unusual sounds, which revolve around a jaunty bassline, while voices dip in and out of the background, repeating the mantra ‘house music’ together with other difficult to decipher vocal clips. the track has a catchy rhythm that bounces along with aplomb. up next ‘house me’ is a sleazy, mischievous cut with a deadly low end and a seductive vocal that urges you to ‘house me’. as the bassline rumbles, high pitched effects add a hypnotic element to the track. badboy business.on the b-side we have ‘perchee’, which is powered by cleverly layered percussion, which is almost ‘live’ sounding. another one of those ‘shonky’ basslines gets us straight into the groove, with utterly contagious beats – this is one to shake the dance floor down its core. finally, ‘cosmopolis’ has that inner city realness flowing through with the chatter of a street corner in the background, a killer b-line and one of those classic vocal samples that is oh so familiar and gets you nodding your head as soon as you hear it. and there it is, four dance floor cuts with plenty of depth and groove in true shonky style… c est formidable!

london based punk duo black volume are not easy to classify. their delirious industrial post punk sounds at times like proto house and at times becomes some sort of mutant electro. their b series sound is made of a conglomerate of filthy percussions, unexpected samples and something with the appearance of melody, with a weirdly addictive result. black rubber is james brown wearing black leather at 40ºc (in the shade) while suffering a mental breakdown. excentric melodies sliding down rhythmic dislexia. negative return blooms from an improvised beat with no traceable sequence, on top of which we find rubbery synth lines, creamy interferences and mysterious sampling, everything sounds like melting from old vhs footage with the future we enter a romantic dystopia. sensual and passionate but equally crunchy, it rises up through cheap calculator arpeggios, pitched vocals and obsessive bass lines. streetfight evoques a desolate landscape, devastated and radioactive. distant echoes from an extinguished human race that left behind only majestic rusty ruins.

reissue of an eye for an eye by byrne & barnes: a true westcoast/aor masterpiece, produced in legendary music city muscle shoals (alabama) and originally only released on japanese label climax. in 1981, robert byrne followed up to his 1979 album, blame it on the night, by teaming-up with multi-instrumentalist brendan barnes to record this rare westcoast classic. if they never recorded any other music together, both display incredible music career and went on to produce for many famous artists such as pointer sisters, patti austin, earth wind & fire, phil collins, brian mcknight, or boyz ii men to name just a few.

in 2015 musician, producer, dj, record collector and tigersushi head honcho joakim played for the first time at mareh festival in boipeba, brasil. like many before him and many since, he found the experience a transformative one. and why not? so many like-minded souls gathered together on a remote island in bahia listening to the sounds of amazing djs while dancing barefoot in idyllic coastal settings all night long. what s not to like? it s quite a concept. in the moment of that experience, joakim vowed to head straight to the studio on his return home to try and recapture that magical vibe, which he did. and true to his word he offered it back to mareh for release on their imprint. a musical gift from the heart. the wonderful percussion and drums characteristic of joakim s productions drift in and around the mix and sit gently alongside the sound of the waves. beautiful arps reach out and capture the glittering stars at night and the first glorious sign of light at sunrise as the party continues. underneath everything the bassline continues to punch through, blending primeval carnival vibes with an electronic sensibility. lovingly mastered and beautifully pressed onto 10 inch vinyl in manila covers, this limited edition release is worthy of any record collection. it also represents a little piece of the magic that is boipeba, and will certainly fit perfectly into those balearic and adriatic settings too.

the prolific producer shows he still has plenty of tricks up his sleeve across all four cuts and stitches in acid, jack and chicago styles with his own sense of charm. the kings comes hard and fast out of the blocks with big hits, wild synths and raved-up vibes that will have you punching the air. knowledge is another banger with powerful kicks and globular bassline run through with more ravey sirens, but this time is a little more haunted. crossing paths is all about a simple but effective bassline that bounces along and takes you with it in ways similar to an omar s joint, then wait is the most stripped back and mysterious of the lot with cosmic melodies panning about in a spacious and airy deep house groove. utterly timeless from start to finish, this is another massively effective offering from innershades.

ts10 is the 1st ep of the toneseries project. born from the collaboration between french music producer, live performer and dj - david k, and lumièreslanuit s co-founder and an der grenze s founder - edouard morin. however, it isn t clear which artist from their extended crew stands behind this 1st release, as if the berlin-based music label wanted to focus on the music rather on the artist. ts10 consists of two tracks, both deep and groovy. whereas ailleurs disseminates the perfect warm-up groove, desert snowflakes fires off a more dancefloor-driven vibe. with regard to the artwork, as shown on the cover, each track has its own colour. there is neither a a nor a b-side. the same applies to the record vinyl itself. each track stands on it own. as a result, ailleurs and desert snowflakes distinguish themselves from each other through their vibes and colours, although they remain in the same spirit. in summary, toneseries brings together the idea of interdependence between music and design: what colour follows on from music and, in return, which musicality comes out of colours.

if this latest missive from camp nado is anything to go by, were in for a scorching summer. for the eighteenth (though mysteriously numbered 014) release on the mancunian institution, messers moonboots and boardman invite a cosmopolitan cast from france and, well, yorkshire, to take us for a stroll through the surf. hulls renaissance man, steve cobby, takes centre stage on his label debut, collaborating with leeds musician rich arthurs on the a-side epic bushfarmer before showcasing his skill at the mixing desk with a b-side remix of penelope antennas sultry tradewinds, which also appears in all its original glory.

unslaved s punjab is a journey through three unconventional club tracks, hear genres entwined, sounds broken down and set free in the most spell-binding way. first track punjab is an eight minute creeper built from insane drum patterns and layered with an eerie, yet blissful melody. with an almost ambient quality, punjab is an off- kilter yet perfect. on the ip, b1 apogee is a dark masterpiece with the rawest, yet most striking of characters. a track that wouldn t have been out of place in early dubstep or grime circles with a spine-tingling bass line, apogee has that sparse, stripped-back feel where listeners discover hidden elements on each listen. exploring the murkiest corners of electronica, apogee is an intense mover that sets a high standard for the release.
